Save Your Money!
Reader David writes:
"There are a lot of people on this page who seem to have been screwed by various companies. A lot of them do not appear to have been able to get their money back from the companies in question.
Below is some information that I am guessing these people are not aware of. Feel free to post any part of this as an informational message for these people if you wish.
This page is great, it saved me from making what certainly seem to be several doomed purchases.
Thanks, David
If these products were purchased using a Visa card, they do have another alternative. They can call their credit card company and dispute the charge. Charges can be disputed for a number of reasons, some of which
depend upon the bank supplying the credit card. Some of the reasons include misrepresentation of product, poor quality, damaged product, and the obvious such as failure to deliver. Most credit card companies want
you to try to resolve your problems with the retailer first, but if this fails they probably can help.
The beauty of the dispute process is that you do not have to deal with the retailer, you only deal with your credit card company. If your credit card company determines that your dispute is valid, they will take it up with the bank providing the credit card services to the retailer from which the product was purchased. There are several possible outcomes:
1) The retailer's bank agrees with your bank, and takes the money away from the retailer. There is nothing the retailer can do about this.
2) It goes to arbitration at Visa and Visa makes a ruling. If they side with your bank, then the results are the same as in #1; otherwise, you may have lost (see below).
3) The two banks decide to split the difference. This is a partial or full victory from our point of view (see below).
4) Your bank decides your claim is bogus. You lose.
5) You fall into one of the scenarios above that says see below. Even if your bank loses, they may decide to eat the charge to keep you happy. All banks allocate money in their operations budget for this scenario as well as fraud.
Also of interest. If the case goes to arbitration it costs the losing bank $400, so if the disputed amount is well below this there is a good chance of a settlement that benefits you. Also you can usually still dispute a
charge even if you have used the product. Sometimes you even get your money back and can keep the product.
The only downside to this process is that it takes thirty to ninety days, and requires you to send in a letter and maybe some paperwork. This should be automated in the next two years, since we are currently building a
pilot application to do so.
This is a great way to hit these lousy companies where it hurts, and there is not a lot they can do about it. Fortunately in the world of Visa the customer is very often right.
I would expect most credit card companies to have similar policies, but I only know Visa's.
Please call your credit card company and find out your options next time you are mistreated."

Details: I was about to spend around $1200.00
with this company. I made my first
phone call to them, and got some girls
cell phone. After emailing them
numerous times I guess they finally
fixed the phone. I then talked to a
lady about ordering the bumpers. She
informed me that the bumpers were being
built and would take 2wks and she took
my information and would call me when
the bumpers would be ready. I'm a
patient man. Ok. I waited 3ws. No
phone call. Now i'm beginning to
wonder what kind of company this is. I
finally call them. No one answers the
phone. This goes on for another week
of calling everyday at all hours of the
day. At this moment i'm begining to
have serious doubts about this
company. Finally after leaving several
phone messages and emails, a lady calls
and tells me the bumpers where actually
messed up when they were being built
and they have to be re-bent, and she
would contact me when they would be
ready. That was 1 month ago. I
thought i was a paitent man. I would
hate to know I actually needed help!
Customer service is HORRIBLE! Do they
actually sell anything? If they do,
I'd hate to have to get ahold of these
people for help or questions. Took me
2 months to get someone to call me
back. Never did order the bumper!
Guess they don't want to sell anything.
So, My question? Am I the only one
they don't wanna sell anything to?
Anyone else have problems with this
company? They where terrible!

Details: This deluxe soundbar sounded like the ideal answer. No more kicking the 6x9 covers off, no soaking the speakers offroad etc. The cuspis speakers sound like crap, even with 45 watt CD player. Dont sound as good as the 4x6 front speakers that came with the jeep. To make things worse I had a piece of the hardware fail leaving it hanging halfway down. I think it is a design flaw. The metal going into the soundbar box is very thin and not very
wide, about 1 inch. Keep in mind this soundbar is very heavy, like 35 pounds or so. IT WILL SHAKE back and forth no matter how much you tighten the U bolts leading to fatigue and metal failure. Bestop was good about sending a postage paid pickup and quickly mailed out another but I will be selling it since I believe it will fail again. great idea for sound but
too damm heavy for the hardware and poor speaker quality.

Moderate tire pressures don't help. Never large debris, always sand or dirt in the bead causing a small rim leak. Every off-road trip ends with me cleaning and
repairing at least 2 tires. I think it has something to do with the rim protector, but can't be sure. I can't recommend these tires to anyone.

Details: In july I took my 91 YJ to "4 wheel parts" for a 2.5" lift, shackle reversal, new seats, wheels, tires, and 4.10 gears (f/r). They told me that they had most of the parts and they would have the next in a couple of days. They promised all would be done within 5 days. to make a long story a little shorter, I finaly got
my jeep back more than a month later. Plus they screwed up my shackle reversal. They mounted the front bracket on its side in a way that it made the axle ride about 3-4" to the rear of normal. It also made the front end ride a little low and the 32" BFG's rub every time I hit a bump. When I complained about the constant
rubbing, they told me that the Renegade package on my jeep was the cause was and asked me if I minded if they hammered some sheet metal out of the way. I told them to go ahead since
I thought they were professionals. What they hammered was my BODY TUB!! Well when I finaly got to atlanta fron san diego (where I had the work done)
I looke closer at the job they had done and realized that when they cut off the old spring mounts they also cut a 1" diameter HOLE in my frame!!!
I went BALLISTIC at the 4 wheel parts in atlanta and they agreed to fix the weld and the SRS for free. I got stuck with the sloppy hammer job to my body
though. Please e-mail me for more info about 4 wheel parts. They screwed everything they did to my jeep up except for the seats. The SRS was just
the most quantifiable screw up! They are NOT the off road enthusiast they appear to be.........4x4 newbie beware!!

mailed and spoke with them a lot and all they would do was send me the cross pins but they won't take it back. the installation was easy and i checked the thrush washer clearance and everything but either i got a faulty one or they all just suck. either way i'd skip that crap and maybe get their gearless one next time. if i hit the lottery. but i've got a broken one if anyone wants to buy it from me just e mail me |

Model: 1999 TJ Wrangler
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: artymec@cox.net
|
Details: I ordered the rotors and drums from 4WD Hardware, neither of them fit correctly. The run-out could not be turned on the rotors, because the hub mounting surface was too deep for my application. Also, the mounting surface was super thin and flimsy. The drums were mounted, however they would not seat flush against the hub. The center hole and lug stud holes were bored offset from the center of the drum. This caused my wheels to wobble, and the break pads to squeak. I also ordered a hand vacuum pump. The one I received was not the one pictured in their catalog. It was constructed of "cheap" plastic and could not evac the fluid from my brake caliper, (it couldn't suck water from a glass!!.) What a let-down!!! I thought I had found a company with a large inventory of quality mechanical repair parts, I was mistaken. I attempted to contact 4WD Hardware via e-mail to rectify the situation, I received no response.

rained. I have water damage to my seats and carpet because the sunroof was not installed properly. They are nice at the factory, but between the
sunroof, the bolt holes on the frame not matching, the drivers side upper door not fitting, the seals improperly installed, and the screws holding in
the sunroof falling out I would not recommend this product to anyone, not for $2500. Then the shipping company they used said they couldn't bring the
top to my home, I drove an hour and a half to pick it up and they refused to reimburse the delivery charge. Every time I complained they were nice, they
sent me a replacement door 6 weeks later (wrong color, the pegs weren't set right, and the latches were different from the other door). I sent
it back and they forgot to reattach the latches that hold it on. 3 months later and I am still waiting for a new seal for the sun roof! When is enough

Details: Well... this lift sucks...or at least compared to any other 4 inch lift. The free arch of the springs are 5.5 inches
front and rear. A 4 inch skyjacker lift is arched 8 inches in the front and 8.5 inches in the rear. The rear
is arched more to increase lift due to the larger axle tubes of the dana 44 in the rear and the degree shims. Both of
these things make your jeep lower. So if you put in this lift your jeep will sit lower in the rear and will look
really small compared to a skyjacker lift. The skyjacker also has teflon slip pads between the springs. This
give you smoother operation and better fles. Save your money and go with the bear of suspension. |

joints. I explained this Jeep is my daily driver, to no avail. They want me to buy new ones and ship back the old ones. If the wear is what they concider warranty, they will refund my money.
BUT, if it doesn't come under warranty, then I don't want the POS's on my Jeep !! DUH?!?! But I will be stuck with $600-700 worth of Skyjacker heims that I don't want !!!

Details: I had a total birdsnest of wires on my 79 CJ7, but everything did work. My main goal was to get rid of the ugly
and hazardous mess and replace it with a neat and tidy new harness. Since I have a 4WDH fiberglass body, I thought
that their own wiring kit made especially for glass bodies was the the way to go. WRONG!!I tried to follow the directions that
came with the kit as best I could, but there were many discrepencies between the kit and directions. After being stumped and thinking that I was at
fault, I towed it to a local shop. $240.00 just get it running and exterior lights working. They told me that it wasn't my fault it was the kit
that didn't make any sense. I still have a completely usless dash. Some instrument lights are on all the time and some go out when the headlights are
on. No temp, fuel, tack, or the stock clock(no wires for it at all)and the dash is the only part that actually matched up with the directions for the
most part. I called to report my problems with 4WDH and they said they had never heard of this problem and issued me a $50 credit. When I bought it
I asked if there were ever any problems and she said no it was a simple job but they had had a lot of those jeeps in their shop to straighten out
the wiring. Guess I should have read between the lines. |

Details: The complaint here is not so much with the product as with the company.
I purchased these disconnects about two months ago and loved them,
see my entry in "Excellent." However, after two monthes the pin bolt
which installs to the sway bar snaped while turning a corner on a surface
street. I informed Sky Jacker who was aware of the problem but they did
not send a new part or warrnety the product. Instead they informed me
that I installed them wrong, however, no instructions were sent and Sky
Jacker told me they were a "factory bolt-on replacement." Apparently the
sway bar needs to be drilled out to 5/8 to allow the pins some mobility, I
do not buy it and was serverly dissappointed. So much that I canceled my
order for the new Extreme 6" lift from Sky Jacker and went to the
Rubicon. No doubt this was poor business on thier part. I GIVE SKY JACKER THE BIG THIMBS DOWN! |

take a couple of weeks. Well I wait a couple of weeks and call back, they tell they had a inventory going on last
week and that they don't know the status, but will check. Kewl, I wait on the phone, long distance from OVERSEAS,
and the guy comes back and says they have everything but one of the Bestop pieces, but it will be in the morning
shipment and they will send out the order then. 'No problem' I think, I'll wait. 2 weeks go by, no order, call Desert Rat
back again, this time I'm told, Oh yeah, we have had it all here since last week, but since we have to send it
through the US Post Office we are waiting to get a truck load of shipment before we send it. Appears it's to much
trouble for the people at Desert Rat to go to the post office and mail parts to US service members serving overseas. I
explain to them that I'm in the Army stationed overseas and that the US Postal Service is the only was I can
get shipments and that I have waited well over a month already. Well he tells me that it's to much trouble to
go to the Post Office for one shipment, even a shipment for over $1K and that if I want it fast I can pay $150-200 for a
air express shipment. This after waiting over a month already? Bottom line, if you want a company that cares

was told it will take a couple more days before they ship it. After calling
3 more times i finally received them in the month of October 1999 !!! The
instruction weren't that great, but I managed to install them in a couple of
hours. The real problem is that the powder coating started coming off from
everywhere on the skidplates. This started only 3 months after i had them.
Needless to say that it's now been 1 year since the install and I HAD to
take them off because they are rusting big time :( I will have to repaint them
because TOMKEN (Crap) hasn't responded to my problem yet.... I stopped sending
e-mails and stopped calling a few months ago. I would understand if the
coating was coming off if it was scratched on a rock or something but
the coating just peeled right off from everywhere including the top surface
which was never scratched or stepped on. |

Well I was annoyed, but said fine, scheduled my project for the next weekend. 7 days goes by. I go BACK to

First, as usuall, the instructions are about as clear as mud on how to actually install the thing, given Im not the best mechanic, but I think the instructions should actually include some mentioning of where exactlly all the parts go, if not for the parts list I would assume via the instruction that half the parts dont need to be used. Which brings me to problem #2, no grade 8 hardware, although I just like using grade 8 bolts the kit only comes with grade 5. my Jeep even being looked at! I had to take a copy of the tech service bulliten to show them how to fix it,
which they still could not do. They told me 3 out of the 5 times that the water leak was fixed, it wasn't. They
also tell me that there is no bulliten for the squeak, but I just found one that was put out in '98. They told me
they had the same problem with another '98 and couldn't fix it so they deemed it un-fixable! They were able to change
the light bulb under the hood so I am impressed with that (sarcasm). They also scratched my hood down to the
metal while working on the water leak and agreed to fix it. When I went to the GMAC web page to report their poor
service, the rep called Casey and talked to the service manager. The manager lied and said that they had
fixed most of my concerns (the light bulb?), that I had not yet had the time to take a tech out for a drive to
duplicate the under vehicle squeak (did twice), and that they did not damage my hood, (told me they did and would fix
it) and that they would fix it out of good will! A dealer painting a customer's entire hood out of good will?
BS! They GMAC page was no help but that is because they were going on info from Casey who were lying to them to cover

and an AMC 360 rides like I bolted the axles directly to the frame. You can
jump up and down on the front bumper and there is no movement. This is a
result of a 4" lift kit from BDS. I called complained and they said i need
atleast 12,000 miles on the springs to "loosen up" and i should remove one
leaf from each pack. Well this made absolutely no difference. Save your money, that what I'm doing to buy

Company: Steel Horse
Product: Premium Seats
Model: N/A
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: scott.erholm@lmco.com
|
Details: I wish I'd have found this site before I
ordered some Steel Horse seats. The seats were complete garbage! Here's the
details:
First of all, the slide mechanism is extremely cheap and only locks one slide. This in itself is a safety
hazard. The bolt holes in the main mounting bracket were not drilled accurately, so that the holes did not
line up with the bolts on the seats. The center console is constructed primarily of cheap plastic, and there
are two steel rods which stick out from the folding mechanism which will rip the vinyl sides of the seats, if the seats
are moved forward. The headrests only lock on one side, which makes them sit crooked on the seats. To top this all
off, I paid $50 for the "adapter kit" which consisted of nothing more than two
steel plates with holes drilled in them.
Upon installing the seats the first time, I found that the seats would not slide rearward even as far as the stock
seats. Also, the seats sat higher than the stock seats. These two factors combined cramped my short 5'10" frame
too close to the pedals, and greatly decreased the headroom. To correct these problems, I reversed the bracket,
and mounted it a low as possible. With this method, the seats are in an acceptable position, but the center
console now sits on top of the seat belt mounts, rendering them inoperative. Regardless of how the mounting bracket
is configured, the center console seat sits higher than the two main seats, and the back folds back to a 90 degree
angle, making the center seat practically useless for actually seating a passenger.
I paid over $1000 for these seats, and I have never seen such poor quality of workmanship and materials. This is
just another in a long list of reasons to never, ever, ever buy anything from Steel Horse! |

The front bumper was received with a large chip on the lower tube.
A quarter sized dent in the riser, and the riser is not parallel with the
bumper itself.
The rear bumper was received with a large chip on the lower tube. The
angle of the bend in either end of the top tube does not match the angle of
the bend in either end of the lower tube. There was apparently no prep
work done on this bumper before it was powder coated, there is weld
spatter around the beads where the tubes were welded together.
I believe Smittybilt makes a similar set of bumpers, and the nerf bars I
recieved from them were excellent! |

Details: Won item on a dutch bid in eBay. Arrived quickly but was falsely
advertised. States on both his website (www.wee1.com) and in the eBay
listing that there is no modifications needed for it to work. Confirmed it in
an e-mail he specifically sent to me. After 6 hours of trying to make it
work as his instructions stated, I gave up. Began my own modifications,
which didn't help much. The problem is is that the ABS plastic, besides it
being flimsy, wouldn't allow the headlight bezels to fit back into their
holes properly and line up with the screw holes. It was to thick.
Eventually I used my Steel Horse Headligh Billett Covers (never thought
they would come in handy for anything besides rusting and the need for
constant repainting) to hold the Grille Cover on. Honestly looks good but
it's not worth the hassle. Don't try to modify it if you do get it because he
will not give you any kind of refund. Ted Vanzant was very upset that I
caught him in his game of attempting to rip Jeep people off. He needs to
concentrate on HP Toner refills and lay off the Jeep products.

Details: The Mustang soft top I purchased for my 90 Wrangler gives a different look for
the wrangler and allows the top to be taken off w/ the rear portion in
place. The company included a liner that really helped silence the soft
top. However, the directions were poor ( at best ). I called the company for
help and the cust service person told me that the directions were indeed
lousy ( then why ship them w/ with the directions ). Once installed, the top
does not come close to making a tight seal. I get standing water in my jeep
every time it rains. Additionally, at freeway speeds the top has a dangerous
tendency to detach itself and fly off. This is both a hazard to yourself and
others. The company really should make the customer aware of this serious
limitation of it's product. Please consider any other manufacturer before
this one. Please email me with ANY questions regarding my experiences with

Details: You have probably seen the advertisements for these seat covers in the back
of other 4X4 magazines, but absolutely do not buy them! I bought a set that was black and gray
and the included the heavy-duty neoprene front and back option. They looked great but set me
back about $350. When I ordered them I told the guy I have a Jeep and that I run with the top
off for at least 7 months out of the year, he said no problem just use our UV protection spray.
Needless to say, 3 months after I bought them the gray fabric started to disintegrate and fall
off. I took them back to the factory (I live 15 minutes away) and ended up talking to the
owner. He was extremely rude and accused me of having excessive sand on my pants and that was
what caused my covers to wear! I pointed out to him that the black colored portion of the
covers was still in good shape and that just the gray part had degraded so it must be the
materials. He flat out called me a liar, but did refund my credit card. Since then I have met
numerous other owners who have had horrible experiences with these covers.
If you put these covers on a Honda and they never see the weather you will probably be ok, but
never put them on a real 4X4. Just look at their web site, they offer three separate product
just to protect the covers! I ended up getting my seats completely re-upholstered for $380. |

Details: First off, Rubicon Express uses Pro-Comp springs in their 2.5" and 4" lift
kits. Is it any wonder why they do not advertise this fact? Because no one would buy them if
they did. Most of us will agree that Pro-Comp springs suck. I did not know they used these
springs until after I ordered them. That brings me to the other reason I write this today.
I ordered their lift kit and was very clear about my address, even had to spell it for them.
I ordered their lift kit and was very clear about my address, even had to spell it for them.
I paid $200 just for the shipping and handling! It was 2 weeks later that I received the lift;
well, part of it. I did not get 1 front leaf spring. I was told by Fed-Ex that the spring would
be in the next day or so, and when another week went by, I decided to call Fed-Ex. Fed-Ex
delivered the spring already actually 4 days ago, but they delivered it to some guy in South
Carolina. I live in Delaware, a couple hundred miles away! They said that they delivered it to
the address that Rubicon Express gave them, and that RE gave them permission to just leave it
outside the garage door. I do not live in SC or have a garage. So I call RE and they are very
short with me like it was somehow my fault. They are going to try to get the above mentioned
spring back from SC and then mail it to me. "That is the best we can do" they said. Now is that
what they call customer service? I don't! I suggested they just send me a new spring and then
deal with the one in SC later, because that was their mistake and not mine. "I'm sorry we can't
do that" they say. Bull!! I informed them that this will be the last time I would ever order
anything from them, and unless you enjoy spending your hard earned money buying complete
strangers Jeep parts, I suggest you buy from someone else. Besides I think Pro-Comp (I mean RE,
or is there really a difference?) should have informed me that I was buying someone else
springs! Had I known they were Pro-Crap, I would not have spent the money to begin with.
In short Rubicon Express' bottom line is not customer satisfaction but $$$$. Stick with a
company that actually cares, this is not one of them. |

Details: I really like most products from RE, but their disconnects suck. First the
ones they sent me were too long and put holes in both fenders. I went from a 3" lift to a 5"
to solve this problem (at least that is what I told my wife). Then, after about 2 weeks of
driving, they really became sloppy. The noise is rather embarrassing when I have passengers
or drive slow near a group of people. The biggest problem with mine was when the XJ leaned
very dangerously in a sharp corner. The truck also began to dive during normal braking after
that. When I inspected the front end I noticed one of the pull pins missing. A friend of mine
had four spare pins from a spare set of RE disconnects. He gave me one and off I went. During
our next 4x4 trip, I heard my front coil spring pop. We were only on a dirt road. I looked at
the spring and discovered that another pin had fallen out and the swaybar link was slamming
into the coil. I took the disconnect assembly off of the driver's side only and drove the 2
hours home with the XJ jumping at anything above 50mph. My friend gave me another pin the next
day. I now use plastic zip ties to hold the pins in place. So much for the "quick" in the
disconnects. My friend hasn't lost any pins, but he has suffered the noise and slop. Go with
the single pin units. They're much more sturdy. |

Since I have owned this kit (which cost me around 1800 bucks), I have

since I'm not the greatest electrical wiz, but when you have a simple problem and you
call for advise and you get Frank(?) who treats you like a dumb #%@$ so you feel like you
just got ripped off. I have replaced numerous sensors, a idle air control motor,
had the computer fixed for $200.
In the beginning, I was told of many reset codes that were not in the manual. Frank made
it sound as if I was in on the creation of this thing and was completely out of line with
his comments. Next came the failing parts that once you fixed one another problem
arose. I had suspicion that the computer was malfunctioning and asked to
see if they would bench test it at my cost. I would pay shipping and the
repair only to get "I don't want that f#@$@$ thing sitting in my shop, what
makes you think it's the computer?". Three months later, after talking to Eric,
I sent the computer in and they found numorous problems with it.
Maybe things are changing! I have spoken with Eric and Scott many times and they seem

Details: 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers customer service sucks. I ordered a set of
RS9000's in preparation for installing a 4" lift on my CJ-5 (when I finally got the right
size, the RS9000's have been great!). I had not yet installed the lift, so I didn't have
exact measurements. I figured that they should know which shocks to sell me, I mean,
there have been more than a few CJ-5's with 4" lifts, right?
Well, they sent me the wrong shocks - they didn't even reach the mounts
after I got the lift on, so the Jeep just sat there.
I e-mailed Rancho directly to get the scoop on which shocks I SHOULD have gotten. They
said the ones I got were for a 2.5" lift, and I should have gotten part #s 9112 and 9116.
So, I call 4WPW and tell them to send me the right ones. They tell me those aren't the
right part #s and I should have 9116's on all corners. I told them that considering their
previous screw-up, I'll go with Rancho's advice and get the 9112/9116.
Then the guy proceeds to accuse me of already using the previous set, and says they'll have
to receive the shocks back from me before they send me the replacements. I ended up paying
for the second set so they'd expedite them to me, and I had to wait for a refund on the
first set. Boy was I pissed. Save your money and buy your products from someone else. |

always the run around. I got sent to voice mail, transferred to different lines, I
was told I would be called back, (yeah right). So I tried to go the e-mail route, that
never got responded as well. I finally called and talked with someone who was suppost
to be in charge, he just seemed annoyed and wouldnt give me the time of day. They would
not sell me the rest of the cat-back. Im pretty bent. Borla is a good exhaust, but I

Details: I bought a '92 Jeep Wrangler from Dan Eastman Jeep in Bountiful, Utah. It
had only 15,000 miles on it when I bought it. After a month, I noticed that it
just had no power, and the air filter was full of oil. I took it to a local
mechanic (I live 3 hours from Bountiful) and he did a compression check.
The motor was completely blown. After rebuilding my motor, they went to
install it and discovered my clutch was also junk. So my great deal at $7300
had just turned into $9400. I hadn't even taken the thing off-road yet. After
washing the Jeep, a multitude of scratches appeared that they had hidden
with some kind of colored wax, and within a few months, I also discovered
my front differential was junk. When I bought the jeep, it had a nice new
air filter, but by the time I got it home, it was saturated with oil. I have a
hard time believing that the mechanics at Dan Eastman didn't know the
motor was bad, and just did their best to hide it till they could get the Jeep
off their lot. They clearly did it with the paint job, and I believe they knew
about the engine problems as well. Dan Eastman sells lemons, stay way clear! |

and only made one mistake. I bought it from Ferman Automotive in New Port
Richey, Florida. I had a problem with the clutch and they wanted $700.00 to
fix it. The TJ had 3,000 miles on it. They would not warranty the problem
because it was taken off road. A Jeep off road, who would think? When they
finally did fix the problem, they reassembled the vehicle wrong. Clutch
grinds, no 4-wheel-drive, and transmission leaks. They Suck. In a nutshell,

When I ordered these guards from Quadratec, I thought they were produced
by Kentrol, or I wouldn't have bothered. When they arrived, I thought
oh no (having read the postings on this page). But since I live in Canada, I
couldn't be bothered with the hassle of shipping them all the way back. When I
installed them, I noticed that the horizonal bars across the lights were
not perfectly parallel, but I figured I could live with that. I gave them a
polish (incidentally these were supposed to be stainless steel) and you
wouldn't believe the black grime that came off on the rag. After driving
around for a couple of days, rust spots/stains started to appear
(stainless steel!!??). The only way to keep them look half decent is to polish
at least once a week...and this is the summer...I can hardly wait to see how
these hold up over a long Canadian winter. Steel Horse is total garbage! |

and the finish was sloppy. When I tried to install them, I noticed there was 1/4" difference
in width fron top to bottom - obviously not welded on a jig. I ended up rebuilding them
before I could install them. You get what you pay for, and the extra $15 a pair for Con-ferr
shackles is well worth the money. I have no problem with 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers, but

Details: I must be dumb again. :) First, I bought some steel horse headlight
covers ('cos I love how they look, and my brother has them on his YJ.) I made
the HUGE mistake of buying chrome. In 5 days, they had already started to rust,
so I polished off the rust and clear coated them. But, the rust seeped in
the edges anyways. =Þ So, I decided "Okay, they're cheap chrome plating, if
I get stainless, they'll be fine, 'cos stainless doesn't rust." Sure, now the
headlight covers themselves don't rust, but all the hardware does, and they
said it was all stainless hardware. Buy these if you wwant, but clear coat them
immediately and heavily, don't miss a single spot. Never again will I buy a

Yeah, right. The truth is, I tried installing them on my '98 Wrangler, and
found that they rubbed against the front bumperette and the torsion bar
cover. I didn't want that, so I tried putting them on our '92 YJ, but since
it only has one accessable hole on the front, and I didn't want to drill
through it's torsion bar cover into the frame, I just gave them to one of our
employees who owns a CJ for $15. Since I paid $40 total for them, it was quite
a waste. I just went and bought Mopar hooks, and couldn't be happier. Don't

Details: Everyone always told me "Steel Horse sucks!", "My steel horse top fell
apart!", etc. I did not intend to Buy Steel horse when I bought this, and I do
not intend to ever again. When I picked the belts up from Quadratec, I thought about
returning them right there, but I figured "How badly can they screw these up?". The
answer is, A LOT! To start with, the kit does not include instructions. Not a problem
if you had factory shoulder belts, but I didn't. Then you come to the latch for the
belt. Unlike the factory latch, which is twisted to come up alongside the console, these
are flat, and when I called Steel Horse, I was told it's a universal kit, it's supposed
to be that way to fit all jeeps. Okay. I went to go mount the strap, and found a few
surprises, mainly that all the bolts do not fit, the bolt for the roll bar was 3/4 of
an inch long, and it needs to be 3.5" to hold the belt and go through the bar. I called
Steel Horse again, and talked to a technician who basically insulted me and said that the
reason there are no instructions is because anyone can figure it out. Guess what. I'm a
part of anyone. I solved it. I went to the hardware store and bought new bolts. Basically, I
spent almost double the price in new bolts and nuts and lock washers (which they forgot).
Get these if you want shoulder belts (it's the only one I could find), but be prepared
to improvise a lot. |

They didn't fit. Called Lange again to let them know. They knew they weren't 3/16". Promised

Details: I spoke with painless in September of 1998 about a wiring harness for my
'84 CJ7. I told them I was running Mopar fuel inj. and ARB lockers. What I needed was a
new stock harness. The people before me had hacked the dash wiring so bad that I was sick
of hunting down shorts. So they suggest harness #10106. I order it in September, and it
shows up 8 weeks later. When I start my project rewire, I notice their harness is missing
certain key wires, like windshield washer pump wiring etc. I call customer service and they
tell me that I should have ordered #10110. So 10 weeks later I get the new harness. I find
that the fuse block does not have fuses in it, and some of the wires are not properly crimped.
The labeling was good, but I had to check each connection for proper crimping. When I
called customer service, they where of no help. They said that they do not seal their boxes
so someone must have tampered with the harness. After they found out that I was an
automobile tech for a major auto manufacturer, and that electrical is my field, they
seemed to be more helpful in answering any of my questions. Plus all of their stuff takes
at least 8 weeks to get. Save your money and buy from someone else.

Details: I ordered $40 worth of items. Their prices were real cheap! But when
they arrived the final cost was near $80. This was a LITTLE high. I
ordered hood latches, door sills and a light bar. When they arrived (all
separately and days apart) the only item not damaged was the hood
latches. Used for padding for the light bar were sticks of dirty ladies
speed stick and some prescription drug pamphlets along with the
shresdded box taped back together. The door sills were mailed in
between two pieces of cardboard stapled together and similarly for the
light bar. The only problem was that the light tabs had poked through the
cardboard and were damaged. I called, they said it wasn't their fault and
that the deodorant wasn't put in the packages by them but they assured
me that the shipping costs were fair. sure they were. JC Whitney may be

Well, I did that and still had the knock. At .040 I had a slight knock and eventually ended

performance gains for my 2.5l TJ. Maybe it works better on jeeps that need the extra

Details: I ordered a bunch of stuff from JC Whitney; camshaft, timing chain, rings
and bearings, gaskets, floor mats, etc. I had a tapping lifter and was
going to town while the Jeep was down. The operator assured me that all the
parts where in stock except for the floor mats which would be shipped
directly from the factory. Based on this info, I took the Jeep's engine
apart to have the cylinder head serviced while waiting on parts. After
receiving the floor mats, I called JC Whitney and was told that none of the
items I ordered were in stock and they had been back ordered. While I was
talking to this operator I had the Jeep in the driveway stripped to the bare
block! The engine rebuild kit arrived 3 weeks later minus the gaskets. I got
the gaskets overnight from the local auto parts dealer for $75 and was able
to get the Jeep back on the road in 5 hours. I never received the gaskets
from JC Whitney. The Jeep ended up being off the road for 3 months because
of JC Whitney. Needless to say, I've been throwing out the catalogs they

Details: I don't have a problem with Warn or
their high quality products. The Warn suspension is bombproof (very stiff
until it breaks in, but works great with my 35's) When I ordered the kit
from Leon Rosser Jeep. I received my parts in a timely fashion; on
inspection, I received 2 leaf springs, 4 shocks, no u-bolts, and a part I
could not identify. When I called Leon Rosser, they identified the springs as
one for the front and one for the rear. I had to explain to the operator
that my Jeep has 2 springs in the front and 2 springs in the rear. The u-bolts
were overlooked. I had to ask which shocks were for the front and which
were for the back. I found that the unidentified part was a steering column
extension for a Bronco 2. I still stand by Warn products but have done no
more business with Leon Rosser Jeep.

liter engine, I decided to buy the Weber carburetor kit for it. Everything I had
heard about their kit was good, and it was supposedly the best thing on the
market next to fuel injection. After installing the kit it didn't run right. Every
time I tried to accelerate even moderately, there was hesitation and the engine almost died.
I dialed it in with help by phone four times. Each time it didn't work right,
they told me it was my Jeep and possibly a worn out engine. Now after
having the engine rebuilt by a performance company which included flat
top pistons, a comp cam, and port and polishing, and adjusting the carburetor
their self it still doesn't run right. Save your money and go elsewhere.

to drill (or actually just punch through cause they're so damn weak) new holes to match
up and the rear ones aren't even big enough to get all the screws in, and in the picture
the flare fits flush with the side of the fender and around the side marker light but
in actuality it looks like sh#@! I have one thing more to say and that is Steel Horse sux

Details: The Fiberglass from Shell Valley was so thin in places I could
see my hand on the other side. I've purchased other fiberglass products with
no defects from Turner 4WD.

Company: Besttop
Product: Jeep tool box back seat combo
Model:
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: d.bowers@worldnet.att.net
|
Details: I always thought Besttop was high
quality! but, I was wrong this time, the frame for the back of the seat was
bent electrial conduit, and held together with lag screws into plywood!
CHEAP!!! And, you can't even get into the tool box because the seat won't
rasie far enough, the hasp is held on with 1/4"x20 lags and a 9 year old with
a screwdriver can pry it off! JUNK!!!

Company: Splitfire
Product: Sparkplugs
Model: For '95 2.5L Jeep
Opinion: Save your money!

|
Details: I got these for my 1st tuneup on the YJ
and they performed about the same as stock at first. After awhile my mileage
really deteriorated though. I cleaned them after a rollover and that helped
for a bit, but I later changed to another brand and improved more.

Details I ordered new spreader bars for my '92 YJ over two months ago from
Essentials catalog. When I called to find out what was happening with my
order no one could tell me. After one month, one week below zero
weather, and over a foot of snow I called to cancel my order. Then I find
out they did not even refund all my money for a part that I never even
saw. Save your money and find somewhere else to buy.

Details: I ordered a top from an online auto
accessory company - the price was right. However, it seems that SteelHorse had
the top on backorder, and I placed the order in mid October and was told that
the top would ship in about a week, by mid December. I was later told that the top would
not ship until mid January. It seems that the on-line company is also not
impressed with SteelHorse. "Bravo", Bestop - we found one in town with next
day delivery.

Company: Steelhorse
Product: Wrangler TJ Wide Fender Flares
Model: For 1997-1998 Wrangler TJ
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: jerrypb@home.com
|
Details: Steelhorse's photo shows a nice extended fender flare that attaches to
the fender exactly like the stock fender flare does. Steelhorse told me
that was their PROTOTYPE and they have never shipped one that looks
like the one in the photo. What they ship instead is a joke... it slips over
the fender's edges and once the edge is next to the turn signal, you drill a
bunch of holes to finish mounting it. It looks cheap, and it IS cheap.
When I took delivery (before returning it), even the retail store sales people
were almost laughing in disbelief at the poor quality and ridiculous
mounting of the Steelhorse wide flare kit for the Wrangler TJ.
Instead, go with the 7" wide TeraFlares from TeraFlex. That's what I
ended up with to cover my oversized tires and it looks great. Very good
quality, no modifications are needed to install the TeraFlares. I've
completely lost faith in Steelhorse's quality and photos that don't show
what you're really going to receive.

Company: North Georgia Four Wheel Drive
Product: 1.5" Shackle Lift
Model: 95 Sahara
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: ajs2@mindspring.com
|
Details: I've had my lift for around 6 months, and my drive shaft has broken out
once. I've replaced it because they said "Well, the U-joints were probably
bad so it just caused to break out." Well ever since I've replaced both
my U-joints and it has the driveline vibrations that it had before it broke
out. So if I were you, I wouldn't put one on my car because it has already
cost me $100 to fix. Also I have to buy a kit to stop the vibrations in the
driveline, and the cheapest I've found is $499.50

|
Details: I ordered a tailgate and after 2 months I got the tailgate with
a huge dent. Got another in 2 more months, and it was also dented.
Four months later I paid for it to be fixed in a body shop.
I could have gotten a better used tailgate!

Company: Rough Country
Product: Add-a-leaf
Model: YJ rr add-a-leaf
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: kmndobnny@uss.net
|
Details: Save the money a month or two longer for
a complete lift. These were more difficult to install than the whole new
system I put on my CJ7. It noticeably limited flex and the ride suffered. Ride
height changed minimally after springs resettled.

Company: American Metal
Product: Rock Sliderz
Model: N/A
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: greg_pobst@hotmail.com
|
Details: Customer service sucks. I was
consitently lied to about the delivery
date of the product. When I finally
got it, I had to modify the mounts so
they would mount flush with the frame.
Actual performance is marginal at best.

Company: Steel Horse
Product: Steel Horse ANYTHING!!!!!!!
Model: N/A
Opinion: Save your money!
E-mail: Wackalonious@yahoo.com
|
Details: They Make all their stuff overseas and out of cheap materials. My
"Ultimate Locking Console" is made out of fiberboard and really cheap
vinyl. The screws all pulled out of the wood and the vinal ripped the first
winter I had it. Not to mention a five year old could have broken into it. A
friend of mine bought a light bar for the windshield of his Wrangler. The
light bar was about an inch-and-a-half too big for it, and had to be bent to
fit. A few months later the mounts broke on one side. I will never buy a
Steel Horse product again.
